Abstract
The advancement of digital technology has brought a profound transformation in nature of reading practices across different age groups and educational levels. The increasing availability of smartphones, tablets, e-readers, online libraries, social media platforms, and learning management systems has changed how people access, select, and engage with reading materials. This research paper explores the influence of digital technology on reading habits with special reference to students in higher education. It examines patterns of digital and print reading, changes in reading frequency, preferences for formats, and the impact of screen-based reading on comprehension, concentration, and critical thinking. The study is based on a review of existing literature, reports, and empirical studies related to digital reading behavior. The findings suggest that digital technology has made reading more convenient and accessible by providing instant access to vast information resources, interactive content, and personalized learning opportunities. Digital platforms encourage frequent, short-duration reading and support academic tasks through online articles, e-books, and open educational resources. However, the study also reveals several concerns, such as reduced deep reading, fragmented attention, multitasking tendencies, and superficial processing of information due to continuous exposure to digital media. Prolonged screen time may also lead to cognitive fatigue and reduced reading endurance. The paper highlights that while digital technology promotes flexible and learner-centered reading practices, it may weaken sustained engagement with long and complex texts if not used thoughtfully. Therefore, a balanced approach that combines the advantages of digital resources with the strengths of traditional print reading is essential. The study recommends integrating digital literacy skills, guided reading strategies, and reflective reading practices within educational institutions to cultivate effective and meaningful reading habits in the digital age.
